2012 Hot-Air Balloon Pilots

Balloon launches will be determined by weather conditions, and are very dependent on the winds being low.

The Field of Flight is a VERY unique event because there is a WORLD CLASS Airshow & terrific entertainment lineup. The Balloon Roots are still here however and it is still a balloon competition. Every summer, dozens of balloons fill the sky over Battle Creek, offering an extraordinary sight. In 2012, the pilots and their crews will compete to get their names on the Rankings List and win their cash prize. Each launch consists of multiple tasks and the pilots must attempt to hit their tasks "on-target" to get their high rankings. The launches & competition are truly spectacular! Don't miss the "Colors in the Sky" at the 2012 Balloon Festival.

Launches will be scheduled every day of the event.

United States Air Force Thunderbirds

US Air Force Thunderbirds in the Delta FormationThe United States Air Force Thunderbirds one and only Michigan performance will happen right here at the Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival!

There is a chance of Thunder at this years Field of Flight Airshow & Balloon Festival. That’s right, They’re back…the world famous US Air Force Thunderbirds Jet Demonstration Squadron. During their 59th season in 2012, the Thunderbirds will showcase the pride and precision of today’s US Air Force with over 70 performances at several different show sites. The team will proudly perform on behalf of the nearly 700,000 active-duty, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve & civilian Airmen serving at home and abroad. It’s from that diverse group of Air Force professionals that the Thunderbirds team is formed.

The Thunderbirds were first activated on May 25th, 1953 as the Air Force’s Official Air Demonstration Team. They were designated the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit and were stationed at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona flying the F-84G Thunderjet. Over the years, the Thunderbirds flew famous US Air Force Aircraft that have gone down in history such as the F-84F Thunderstreak, the F-100C Super Sabre, F-105B Thunderchief, F-100D Super Sabre, F-4E Phantom II, T-38 Talon….and into the Mighty F-16 Fighting Falcon (Block 52 model) that the team flies today.

The US Air Force Thunderbirds Solos in the Breathtaking Crossover BreakAccording to Indian legend, the Thunderbird was a giant eagle (some envisioned a hawk) that was spoken about with great fear & respect. When it took to the skies, the earth trembled from the thunder of its wings and bolts of lightning shot from its eyes. Nothing in nature could challenge the bird of thunder, the story of the Thunderbird was repeated across generations…and today, it is now a legend.

The legend will take to the skies this summer in Battle Creek, Michigan as the thunder (known as the Sound of Freedom) will represent not only the professionalism of the US Air Force, but the patriotism of our great nation of the United States. The “thunder” will come from six F-16 Fighting Falcon jets painted in Red, White & Blue colors with the Thunderbird emblem on the bottom. Their show will rock the skies as the Diamond formation (Jets 1-4) perform a series of precision maneuvers, keeping their aircraft just INCHES from each other. This is in concert with the high speed & G maneuvers performed by the Solos (Jets 5-6). This includes a series of head-on passes & solo maneuvers showcasing the tactical profile of the Block 52 Viper. In the end, all six jets team up and showcase the pinnacle of formation flying, the Delta Formation.

The Hoppers L-39 Jet Warbird Team

Battle Creek's own, Tim Brutsche and the Hoppers will power the sky in their ever popular L-39 Albatross Jets once again this year after becoming regulars at the Field of Flight. The L-39 is a Soviet Bloc Trainer that has become popular as a jet warbird in the United States. The Hoppers will fly their L-39s in a series of formation maneuvers at this years airshow.

The Hoppers key to their mission is interacting with kids at shows. The pilots have been blessed through hard work and a little luck to be in the position where they are now…to fly dream aircraft. They want kids to walk away after talking with them thinking “I could do that too. All I have to do is work hard in school and think BIG!”

Hopper pilots include Steve Kirik, Dave Mills, Glenn Smith, Dan Sullivan and Paul Wood.
Goooooooooo Hoppers!

Paul Wood in the Warbird Heritage Foundation's F-86 Sabre

Warbird Heritage Foundations F-86 SabreThe F-86 is without a doubt one of the most amazing & beautiful ex-military jet aircraft in the world....and one will be in Battle Creek this summer.

The F-86 was designed in the 1940s as a subsonic jet fighter for the United States Air Force and it first entered service in 1949. The F-86 saw action and became the primary U.S. air combat fighter in the Korean War. Various models were produced in day fighter, fighter-bomber, and all-weather interceptor configurations with a variety of armaments. U.S. production of the Sabre ended in December, 1956.

The F-86's principal counterpart in the war was the Mikoyan-Gurevich MIG-15 "Fagot". Paul Wood's F-86 Sabre Demo

The Warbird Heritage Foundations F-86-F-30 (S/N 52-4986) first entered service in 1955 at Warner-Robins Air Force Base. It was in service until 1960 before becoming a member of the military in Argentina (where it was retired in 1986 and brought back to the United States in 1990)

The Warbird Heritage Foundation acquired the bird in August of 2005.

Don't miss Paul Wood's TERRIFIC performance in this AMAZING aircraft.

Bob Carlton VERTIGO AIRSHOWS in the Jet Super Salto Sailplane

Bob Carlton will be returning to Battle Creek in 2012. Bob Carlton began flying in 1979 (at the age of 19) and has logged over 2000 hours in a wide variety of aircraft (from hang gliders, to airplanes, helicopters to sailplanes). He has been flying air shows professionally since 1993. Over the years, Bob has created innovative performances, from the Helicopter Sailplane Tow, to night aerobatics with strobes & pyro. He even created the world's FIRST & ONLY Twin Jet Sailplane.

Bob Carlton VERTIGO AIRSHOWS Jet Sailplane

Well, with his experience in innovation and the fact that he is a retired rocket scientist, things can only go one direction when he gets his hands on a Super Salto Glider. What resulted? A Jet Sailplane. This aircraft is like no other sailplane (or aircraft) in the world. The Jet Sailplane doesn’t need a tow plane, it can self-launch and climb to altitude under its own power.

The Super Salto is powered by a PBS TJ-100 Jet Engine. Once Bob is at altitude in the aircraft, he will turn his amazing WORLD-FAMOUS smoke system on and perform a very graceful sailplane performance choreographed to classical music. Once his altitude is spent, he doesn’t have to land like normal sailplanes. No he doesn’t, he simply spools up the jet engine and performs an AMAZING & LOUD low-level aerobatic performance complete with vertical maneuvers that no one would ever expect to see a sailplane perform.

Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, AMAZING act & machine that has been seen on the History Channel’s “Modern Marvels”.

Paul Stender "Indy Boys Inc." School Time Jet Bus

Paul Stender in the This amazingly talented & smart adrenalin junkie will heat up the airfield in the WORLDS FASTEST SCHOOL BUS....the "School Time Jet Bus". Students have no excuse turning up late in this school bus! It breathes fire and rockets along at speeds to 367 miles per hour!

Paul has been interested in racing since he was a young boy racing snowmobiles and motorcycles. After racing Badger and USAC Midgets he competed as an Outlaw Sprint Car driver. Not being fast enough for this speed demon he took the reins of his first jet powered vehicle in 1995, rocketing his Jazz Jet-Funny car to almost 300 mph. He won the Pro-Jet Rookie of the Year award in 1997 and his success and fame hasn't stopped there. Paul has been featured on dozens of major media outlets including Monster Garage, Discovery Channel, E!, Inside Edition, Spike T.V. and ESPN.

This standard school bus was fitted with a 42,000 HP GE J-79 jet engine lifted from a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom fighter jet. Paul Stender built this "Hot Rod Styled" Bus that races along at amazingly fast speeds for its size, belches out 80 foot flames and sends huge clouds of smoke billowing from the tail pipe. You've never seen (or heard) a school bus like this.

The mission of the bus, besides to be unique, one of a kind and be entertaining is to inspire kids to follow their dreams and keep away from drugs. That is why the motto on the side of the bus reads "Jets are hot, drugs are not".

The third reason Paul says he's glad he built the bus is- "I guess this is my revenge for all those days riding on the slow journey to school, now it goes at my kind of pace".

Make sure you don't miss the bus that even makes Ms. Frizzle jealous.

Paul Stender in the "Indy Boys Inc." Port-O-Jet

Paul Stender in the Jet Powered Porta-Jon

Planning a restroom break during the show? Well don't try to visit this port-o-potty because it can “GO” faster than you have to. Bringing this amazing and zany vehicle to the 2012 Battle Creek Field of Flight Airshow and Balloon festival is Wisconsin native and adrenaline junkie Paul Stender. Paul, along with his wife and crew chief Therese, will showcase the world's only jet outhouse which has been nicknamed the “Port-O-Jet”. The “Port-O-Jet” was built by taking a portable toilet and attaching it to a go-cart chassis. Then a Boeing turbine, taken from a Navy minesweeper was added to give it power. How much power you ask? Try a whopping 1,000 HP!!! Paul steers the outhouse by sitting on the Jon on the inside. The urinal doubles as a fuel tank...so that's where it goes. This jet outhouse can shoot thirty foot flames from the tailpipe while also shooting flames through the roof vent! With a top speed or nearly 70 MPH, this jet powered outhouse is sure to leave plenty of streaks, in more ways then one.

John Mohr Barnstorming

Get ready Battle Creek….he’s back, and he’s going to take the airport by storm. BarnSTORM that is.

John Mohr Barnstorming in the Stock 220 Stearman
John Mohr is one of the most well known and respected air show performers in the industry today. He has been thrilling air show audiences for over a quarter of a century and has received both the “Bill Barber Award for Showmanship” & the “Art Scholl Memorial Showmanship Award”. He and his wife Lyn are among the most well loved people in the industry as well. Both are from Minnesota, where his family tales of Barnstorming begin. His Grandfather Fred (who knew Charles Lindbergh) was a big barnstormer after World War I. That is the roots of the act.

Now, in the 21st Century, John Mohr takes his OWN 1943 Boeing Stearman PT-17 “Kaydet” Stock 220 to the skies in a Barnstorming act that no one will forget. Re-enacting the “Golden Age” of the 30s, from take-off, you will soon find out that this is not a “normal” aerobatic routine. This aircraft has no modifications to it and is the way it was when it left the factory in 1943 (this means NO INVERTED FUEL TANK). The show is filled with low-level and IN-YOUR-FACE acrobatics, complete with noise & smoke. You’ll soon see why this act is raved about in the industry.

Elgin Wells is an accomplished & renowned pilot & musician out of Atlanta. Growing up around music & aviation really inspired this Aerobatic Competition & Airshow pilot. One day, he decided to mix his two passions together…thus the idea of the “Starjammer” was born.

The “Starjammer” is the World’s ONLY aircraft of its kind and represents the Next Generation of Aerial Entertainment. “Starjammer” was designed to perform Unlimited Class, Level I aerobatics, but it does A LOT MORE than that. The “Starjammer” also incorporates 250+ super-bright LED lights, five smoke streams (spurting patriotic Red, White & Blue smoke), a 4,000 watt amplifier & on board loudspeakers aimed in all lateral directions.

During his days-shows, you’ll see this amazing pilot fly this amazing aircraft in an unlimited aerobatic routine with his five-stream smoke system. He will also put his amplifier and loudspeakers to work as the amazing score is played through those speakers on the aircraft. Isn’t that just amazing?

You won’t be able to see the LED lights during his day-show….but wait until you see it during our night show.
